ALTA Honors Sen. Landrieu, Rep. Perlmutter with ‘Protecting the American Dream Award’

May 7, 2013

ALTA honored Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-CO-7) with the annual “Protecting the American Dream Award" May 6 during a reception on Capitol Hill.

Beginning last year, ALTA started honoring two members of Congress who promote homeownership, protect property rights and understand the value of title insurance.

“We are pleased to honor Senator Landrieu and Representative Perlmutter for their efforts to protect consumers as they pursue the ‘American dream’ of homeownership,” said Frank Pellegrini, president of ALTA. “Their leadership in Washington combined with their understanding of the important services title insurance professionals provide during the home buying process make Senator Landrieu and Representative Perlmutter extremely deserving of this award.”

Sen. Landrieu has been a strong supporter of common sense legislation to grow the housing market and a leader on efforts to ensure families have access to safe and affordable mortgages. She worked with her colleagues to include a bipartisan provision in the Dodd-Frank law to ensure that the new qualified residential mortgage (QRM) regulations would not restrict the availability of credit to well-qualified homeowners. Sen. Landrieu has served in the Senate since 1996 and is the chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurship.

“For many families, there is nothing that provides quite the same joy, pride and peace of mind as owning a home of their own,” Sen. Landrieu said. “I am proud to support smart legislation that helps make this dream a reality for families in our country, and am honored to receive the Protecting the American Dream Award. I’d like to thank the American Land Title Association for this award and for their dedication to helping so many achieve the American Dream.”

Rep. Perlmutter has led efforts to stabilize the housing market and protect homebuyers from the irresponsible lending practices and mortgage fraud that led to the financial crisis. Rep. Perlmutter is a member of the Financial Services Committee, and the Capital Markets and Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSE) and the International Monetary Policy and Trade subcommittees. Rep. Perlmutter has lived in Jefferson County, Colorado, his entire life.

“I’m honored to receive the ‘Protecting the American Dream Award’ from the American Land Title Association. I am grateful to the Association and its members for this prestigious honor. I remain committed and focused on ensuring federal programs provide opportunities to those hard working American's who wish to attain homeownership. Due in large part to a strong housing industry, our overall economy continues to improve and it is important we maintain that positive momentum."
