2012 Year in Review: ALTA Launches Grassroots Network

In March, ALTA launched the Title Action Network, a free and voluntary endeavor dedicated to strengthening the industry’s voice and impact on lawmakers in Washington, D.C., and state capitals across America. The Network operates exclusively to promote the common business interests of the industry through grassroots advocacy activities.

ALTA encourages everyone employed in the land title insurance industry from processors to closers, to join the Network and have an ownership stake in the outcome of laws and regulations that affect the industry by lobbying and building relationships with policymakers.

“With the political climate at what it is today, grassroots efforts have become more important than ever,” said Tim Evans, president of Evans Title Agency in Ohio and chair of the Title Action Network. “To really persuade members of Congress, everyone working in the title insurance industry must get involved and show that issues in question are really important to the folks back home.”

Modeled after a similar and widely successful grassroots program implemented by the Mortgage Bankers Association, the program endeavors to engage both members and non-members of ALTA in the legislative process through grassroots activities.

“This is an organization of title industry professionals, and peer-to-peer membership drives and sharing this information with staff in your offices will be critical,” Evans said. “I encourage you to get involved and recruit others interested in the future success of the title insurance industry. It’s easy to become a member and take action because everything can be done online. I truly find this a great opportunity to grow the stature of the association.”

The Network has taken action on several items, including the CFPB’s proposed mortgage disclosures, the mortgage interest deduction and the National Flood Insurance Program.

To date, the Network has more than 2,000 members. The Dixie, Minnesota, New York and Virginia land title associations have partnered with the Network, supporting growth by promoting membership in their states through emails and newsletters.
