Harmonize Your Best Practices in Nashville

March 6, 2014

Several sessions at ALTA’s 2014 Business Strategies Conference in Nashville are dedicated to help title professionals implement Best Practices.

The general session on Friday, March 14 will feature a live hacking session that will highlight computer and network vulnerabilities. The session will provide real-world examples of how vulnerable settlement agents’ systems are to network breaches when it comes to physical and network security. Participating will be Pat Carney of reQuire, Greg McDonald of CloudStar Consulting, Randall D'Arche of WFG National Title Insurance Co. and Andy Maloney of Nashville Title Corp.

Below are highlights of several of the professional development sessions focused on Best Practices. For more information, check out the registration brochure. CE/CLE credit is pending in many states.

The Do’s and Don’ts of the ALTA Best Practices

Presented by members of ALTA’s Education Committee, this program will feature a series of scenarios that demonstrate “worst practices” resulting in loss for either the consumer or the title company. Each scenario will highlight a specific pillar of the Title Insurance and Settlement Company Best Practices and how loss could have been prevented had these best practices been adhered to. This session will reinforce the importance of the ALTA Best Practices showing what happens when they are not followed.

“Staying Alive” - Your Guide to Surviving the Cyber and Regulatory Onslaught

With the increasing dependence on new technologies and devices, cyber fraud is becoming more and more prevalent. Brent Scheer of Agents National Title Insurance Company, Dick Reass of RynohLive and David Fox of the U.S. Secret Service will discuss the latest cyber fraud schemes, provide an industry perspective on cyber fraud, an update on the cyber fraud regulatory environment, and how to protect your company from these attacks.

The New Escrow Norm

Escrow security is critical to settlement agents, underwriters and lenders. Given the increased complexity in technology, cyber threats and costs associated with employee errors, Dick Reass of RynohLive will discuss the top five reasons to invest time and capital into securing your escrow funds and protecting your company from a financially devastating loss. This session will also examine internal and external risks, costly but avoidable mistakes and implementation of ALTA’s Best Practices to protect your company.

Are You Prepared for the Worst?

An estimated 25 percent of businesses do not reopen following a major disaster. About 70 percent of small firms that experience a major data loss go out of business within a year. Of those businesses that experience a disaster and have no emergency plan, 43 percent never reopen. Linda Grahovec of Fidelity National Title Group, Dale Austin of Continuity Secure and Paul Sullivan of Agility Recovery will share information to help prevent your company from becoming a statistic and be prepared for events that can adversely affect business. The session will include the five Rs of proper planning, life safety issues, effective documentation and implementation, and the 10 steps to business preparedness.

Your Relationship with your Lenders in 2014

Title and settlement companies are one of the many vendors that lenders use in a mortgage transaction. How will you be affected as lenders re-examine their vendor relationships due to the CFPB’s and other regulators’ bulletins on third-party service providers? What are lenders looking at to show regulators when they come for an examination? How can you work collaboratively with your lender? Moderated by Pam Sember of First American SMS, a panel of lenders will discuss the implications of the CFPB’s third-party service provider policies.
