Landtech Unveils Email Encryption Plug-in

March 3, 2015

Landtech has introduced a plug-in for Microsoft Outlook that allows users to check the "recipient email server" for Transport Layer Security (TLS), which is a protocol that ensures privacy between communicating applications and their users on the Internet.

The company said it will introduce another TLS verification tool that resides within the Landtech Settlement System for those not using Microsoft Outlook.

If you have enabled TLS encryption for your outgoing email and the recipient server of your email has also enabled TLS encryption then you may send emails as you are accustomed and meet all NPI (non-public information) requirements for secure email communications.

The "Landtech - Verify TLS" plug-in for Microsoft Outlook allows users to check the recipient email server for TLS encryption support. When a server and client communicate, TLS ensures that no third party may eavesdrop or tamper with any message. This protocol is an industry standard designed to protect the privacy of information communicated over the Internet.

LandTech said that users must ensure that their outgoing/sending email server domain can use TLS encryption. If the email domain being used is not enabled TLS support, emails will not be encrypted, even if being sent with Microsoft Outlook. The Landtech Verify TLS tool can only check a "recipient email." There is no way to check an outgoing mail server except for sending an email and checking the email to see if it arrived encrypted.

Websites that can test recipients’ email servers for TLS include:

The Landtech Outlook TLS Verify plug-in can only check the "recipient email servers" for TLS. This assumes TLS is enabled on the sending side. The company urges users to verify TLS by using the above websites.
