Baker Announces GSE Roundtable for September 12, Stresses Bipartisan Cooperation

August 28, 2000

U.S. Rep. Richard Baker, R-La., Chairman of the House Banking Subcommittee on Capital Markets, today announced that a planned "GSE Roundtable" will take place at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, in the House Banking Committee room, 2129 Rayburn House Office Building.

The Roundtable should provide a superb venue for an open and bipartisan exchange of ideas, Baker said in appreciation to Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-Pa., who first suggested the forum. Baker also agreed with the subcommittee?s Ranking Democrat in describing the Roundtable as "the most appropriate forum for our consideration of this complex and important set of public policy issues."

Baker pledged to continue working closely with Rep. Kanjorski and subcommittee members of both parties to review written submissions and make careful determination about the structure of the forum. Baker also expressed confidence that the event will, again in agreement with Rep. Kanjorski, "promote a free, fair and vigorous deliberation on the future role of the GSEs in our housing finance system."
