New HUD Secretary to Testify Before Financial Services Committee

May 19, 2004

The House Financial Services Committee, chaired by Rep. Michael G. Oxley (OH), will receive testimony from The Honorable Alphonso Jackson, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development on Thursday, May 20. The hearing, which is expected to focus on oversight of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) including the Department's budget request for FY 2005, will begin at 10 a.m.

"I congratulate Secretary Jackson on his recent confirmation, and look forward to working with him," Oxley said. "The American Dream is being achieved by more of our citizens than ever before. Americans are building homes and buying homes at unprecedented rates and more homes were sold in the United States in 2003 than ever before. At a time when our homeownership rate is the highest ever at 68 percent, President Bush has inspired us to make that dream come true for even more Americans."

Secretary Jackson will testify before Congress for the first time since being unanimously confirmed as the nation's 13th Secretary of HUD on March 31. He first joined the Administration in June of 2001 as HUD's Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer
