OLTA Spring Seminar Attendance Experiences 14% Growth

The Ohio Land Title Association (OLTA) recently held its Spring Seminar in Columbus, Ohio where more than 400 professionals from the title industry gathered, representing a 14% growth over last year’s Seminar. More than 50 individuals attended the event for the first time.

OLTA President, Steven Garrett with Chicago Title Insurance Company, and Education Chairman, Mike Sikora with Sikora Law LLC, opened the General Sessions with introductions.

The Spring Seminar featured topics on the many recent changes to Ohio’s title industry presented by authorities from around the state and nation. Steve Hombach from the Ohio Department of Insurance presented the department’s perspective on Senate Bill 185, rules promulgated from the bill and the ABA Regulations. Dean Talaganis of Land Castle Title presented a breakout session on mortgage fraud and safeguards for the title industry. A panel of title agents and underwriters talked about the most common problems uncovered during title exams and the best methods to address them. Friday’s education session concluded with Donald McFadden of McFadden, Freeburg & Sandhu discussing escrow liability.

Attendees also visited several exhibiting companies offering products and services available to the title industry.

Saturday’s activities included an informative update on Class Actions against ABAs by Robert Homan of McDonald, Frank, Hitzeman & Holman; updates on the Ohio Homebuyers’ Protection Act by Michael Huff of Sikora Law LLC; changes to American Land Title Association policy by Paul Hammann of First American Title Insurance Co.; and endorsement forms and educating consumers about title insurance by Anne Anastasi of Troon Management Group.

OLTA’s Annual Fall Convention is scheduled for September 9-10-11, 2007 at The Columbus, A Renaissance Hotel in Columbus, Ohio. Convention goers will hear first hand about the top underwriting questions and the answers to those questions as well as maximizing the effectiveness of your title business.
