ALTA Creates Groups Focused on Data Privacy
June 18, 2019
ALTA’s Board of Governors during a June 6 meeting approved the creation of a Data Privacy Executive Committee and a Task Force.
The two groups will help the association develop guiding principles that address data privacy in a comprehensive manner at the federal or state level. In addition, the Data Privacy Executive Committee and Task Force will work to help ALTA members comply, if required, with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and similar laws.
Data has percolated to the top of the conversation since implementation last year of the European Union's General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR). Closer to home, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) goes into effect Jan. 1, 2020 and gives consumers control over their personal information including the right to know what information companies are collecting about them, how it is used and if it is sold to third parties. While no legislation has been passed, 17 additional states have debated data privacy.
If you have an interest or want to suggest someone who fits the bill, please email Elizabeth Blosser at [email protected]. Members of these new committees will be appointed jointly by ALTA President Cynthia Durham Blair NTP and President-Elect Mary O'Donnell this summer, because the work of these groups will begin prior to ALTA ONE and continue through October 2020.
Candidates will have either a responsibility for data privacy in their job function, experience in helping to develop implementation and training tools for the new law and technology and/or practice in analyzing and reviewing legislation.
If interested in volunteering on any of ALTA’s committees, submit your choices by July 17.
