ALTA Secures BEC Language in House Appropriations Bills

July 7, 2022

Over the past few years, ALTA has successfully advocated for language in various House and Senate appropriations reports. This language directs the respective agencies to report on efforts to combat and raise awareness of business email compromise (BEC) schemes and collaborate with industry partners to address threats.

This year, ALTA secured language in the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) and Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) reports.

The House CJS language (page 77) “encourages the FBI to explore ways to increase collaboration and coordination with industry and other private sector partners in addressing BEC and EAC, and to update its reporting on these scams and enforcement efforts on the IC3 website.”

The House FSGG language (pages 21-22) directs the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) to “brief the Committee within 90 days of enactment of this Act on its ongoing efforts to combat and raise awareness of business email compromise scams, including joint activities conducted with the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Trade Commission, and other relevant agencies.”
