The Texas Land Title Association (TLTA) was recently honored by the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission with the Julian Read Award for Philanthropy in Preservation, recognizing the nearly 20 years TLTA has been a sponsor of THC’s Courthouse Stewardship Program.
TLTA's continued commitment to this program is important to the association’s members and their communities, who benefit from the historic courthouses and the legacy they represent. TLTA President Claire Hartman and CEO Leslie Midgley accepted the award.
"Thank you to the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission, THC Chair John L. Nau III, THC leadership and staff, and everyone who helped celebrate an exciting night supporting our state’s rich history," Midgley said. "It’s an honor to be recognized among the community of benefactors who support the preservation of Texas history."
Since the 1970s, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) has taken an active role in the preservation of county courthouses. In 2005, THC asked TLTA to support the Texas Courthouse Stewardship Initiative, a training and technical program designed to promote the ongoing, regular maintenance of Texas' historic county courthouses.
The stewardship program consists of site visits by THC architects, annual training workshops for county judges and maintenance workers to address issues like inspecting the exterior, identifying mechanical malfunctions, and budgeting for maintenance. This initiative provides training for facilities managers with an emphasis on committing to routine maintenance programs. The land title industry has a long and symbolic relationship with the county courthouses, so it seemed only natural to support this endeavor.
