Sales of existing-single family homes were brisk in March, according the New York State Association of Realtors.

The March sales total was up 11 percent at 5,537 compared with the 5,006 recorded in February, and was down 4.4 percent compared with the 5,790 recorded sales in March last year.

The statewide median selling price rose 6.3 percent to $170,000 compared with February's median price of $159,900, and was up 23.2 percent compared with the $138,000 median price in March last year.

Franklin and Fulton counties led the state in median sales price growth compared with a year go with increases of 236 percent and 132 percent, respectively. Oneida County led the state in median sales price growth compared to February, posting a 129.2 percent increase.

"Although the March sales total was off slightly from a year ago, the New York housing market is thriving in early 2002," said Charles M. Staro, NYSAR CEO. "The decrease in March sales can be attributed to the stronger than usual January and February sales, when the mild weather brought buyers into the market earlier than usual."

NYSAR is a not-for-profit trade organization representing more than 37,000 of New York's real estate associates.
