Despite economic slump, a handful of cities remain attractive to people relocating for careers

Inman News Features has come up with a list of the top five metropolitan areas in the United States offering the best prospects for people jumpstarting a career.

The relocation database identified the top growth metros and their respective neighborhoods as: Riverside-San Bernardino, Calif., with Redlands chosen as the preferred neighborhood for residence; Las Vegas, with Winchester as the area for dwelling; San Diego, along I-5 in University City and La Jolla; Miami-Hialeah, Fla., Brickell Hammock to Coral Gables; and Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill, N.C.-S.C., Charlotte (from I-277 South to Sharon Lane).

Andrew Schiller, a PhD geographer and creator of the company, surveyed more than 270 U.S. metro areas and used data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to pinpoint areas that would be attractive to new career seekers, then identified neighborhoods in the areas where people could live.

To identify great neighborhoods for career starters, Schiller chose predominantly non-married households, many people in their 20s and 30s, with college educations or even graduate degrees, where the housing is mainly rental apartments, and where many people are in professional occupations. was created by Massachusetts-based Location Inc., which specializes in nationwide relocation software, retail site selection, and real estate investment advising.
