Simplifile Announces 10 More Alaska E-Recording Districts; Addition of County in N.C.

April 23, 2013

Electronic recording is now available in 10 new recording districts in Alaska, according to Simplifile, which also expanded with the addition of McDowell County, N.C.

In Alaska, the districts now accepting e-recording include Fairbanks, Fort Gibbon, Nulato, Rampart, Barrow, Nenana, Manley Hot Springs, Mount McKinley, Kotzebue, and Nome. The state recorder aims to have the remaining districts enabled by June 30.

“Our fiscal year ends June 30, and it is our goal to have all 34 of our Alaska recording districts set up to e-record by that time,” said Alaska state recorder Vicky Backus.

According to Backus, who has been the state recorder for the past 12 years, the state began to consider the adoption of e-recording when the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA) was first introduced. The act supported the validity of electronic contracts as a viable medium of agreement.

“We started scanning all documents in 2001 and e-recording seemed like a natural progression,” Backus said. “Plus, it offered another level of service for our customers across the state and the nation.”

Meanwhile, McDowell County became the 26 North Carolina county to begin e-recording with Simplifile.

“The reason I chose to implement e-recording in McDowell County was we wanted the convenience to be brought to the people we serve,” said Tonia Hampton, McDowell County register of deeds. “Technology is advancing and moving forward. Hard-back books and temporary indexes being a thing of the past, this is going to be the future. Coming on board was a way to advance in our office and please many clients that are not able to travel to our county to process a document.”
