Data Privacy Day: Raise Awareness

January 26, 2021

Data Privacy Day is today. Now is a good time to do something to protect yourself, your customers and your business.

Data Privacy Day began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. Data Protection Day commemorates the Jan. 28, 1981, signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection.

According to a Pew Research Center study, 79 percent of U.S. adults report being concerned about the way their data is being used by companies. The National Cyber Security Alliance says respecting consumers’ privacy is a smart strategy for inspiring trust and enhancing reputation and growth in your business.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people are generating personal data through electronic devices. This means businesses that share and store personal data must be more vigilant in how they handle this information. While California already has passed legislation, comprehensive data privacy and security bills have been introduced in Minnesota, New York, Virginia and Washington in 2021. Meanwhile, several states have already passed the model data security bill developed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
