Getting Started with the ALTA Registry

Resources

For Title Agents

Title & Settlement Agents are issuing agents for Title Insurance Underwriters. Issuing agents are agents only for the limited purpose of issuing title insurance commitments and policies. Many agents also manage the settlement part of the transaction, sometimes called closing or escrow. These agents work directly with the consumer and conduct the closing, including work with non-public personal information and loan funds.

If you are a Title & Settlement Agent, you should be in the ALTA Registry! This is an important step in making sure that your lender customers can confidently identify you and work with your confirming Underwriter to secure approval to proceed with a transaction and obtain a Closing Protection Letter.

For Real Estate Attorneys

Real Estate Attorneys are attorneys who manage the settlement part of the transaction, sometimes called closing or escrow. These attorneys work directly with the consumer and conduct the closing, including work with non-public personal information and loan funds, but they are not issuing agents for a Title Insurance Underwriter.

If you are a Real Estate Attorney, you should be in the ALTA Registry! In order to be listed in the ALTA Registry, you will be required to provide your attorney licensing information. This is an important step in making sure that your lender customers can confidently identify you.

For Confirming Underwriters

Confirming Underwriters are title insurance underwriters eligible to confirm title agent records in the ALTA Registry. To become eligible, Confirming Underwriters have undergone an on boarding process that includes service level agreements and training: they are instrumental to the accuracy of records in the registry. When a Confirming Underwriter confirms a record, the process will include accuracy checks of details such as office locations, company names and most importantly, confirmation that the title agent has a relationship with them. Once they have confirmed a record, only then will it appear in the ALTA Registry.

If you are an underwriter and interested in confirming your agents for listing in the ALTA Registry, please contact ALTA Registry staff at altaregistry@alta.org or 855-618-2582.

For Underwriter Direct Offices

Underwriter Direct Offices provide many of the same services as Issuing Title Agents, including title commitments, title policies, and settlement services, but they are part of the Underwriter's corporate structure. Underwriter Direct Offices should be listed in the ALTA Registry, just like Title & Settlement Agents, so that lender customers can confidently identify Direct Office locations.

If you are an Underwriter Direct Office, you may wish to check with the primary contact for your company to determine how to establish and manage your ALTA Registry listing.
